What Happens When an Aircraft Goes Missing Over Water in Canada The radio goes quiet. No mayday call. No distress signal. Just silence where a position report should be.

Within minutes, a chain of events kicks into motion that most people never see — coordinated, methodical, and built on decades of hard lessons. When an aircraft disappears over a Canadian lake, the clock starts immediately. Not when wreckage is found. Not when a family calls 911.

The moment a flight plan isn't closed, or a scheduled check-in is missed, the system wakes up. What Triggers a Search in Canadian Airspace Canada's search and rescue (SAR) system operates on a simple principle: assume the worst, hope for the best, move fast. The country is divided into three Joint Rescue Coordination Centres — Victoria, Trenton, and Halifax. Each covers a massive chunk of territory, including thousands of lakes, rivers, and coastline.

When an aircraft files a VFR or IFR flight plan, it creates a contract with Nav Canada. You say where you're going, when you'll arrive, and what route you'll take. If you don't close that flight plan within 30 minutes of your estimated arrival time, the alarm sounds. For VFR flights without a flight plan — still legal in many cases — it's messier.

No automatic trigger exists. Someone has to notice you're missing. A friend. A family member.

An FBO operator who sees your tiedown empty at sunset. That delay can cost hours. The 30-minute rule isn't arbitrary It comes from survival data. In cold water — and most Canadian lakes stay cold well into summer — a person without a flotation device loses dexterity in minutes.

That happens, but it's not the first move. First comes the JRCC duty officer. They pull the flight plan. Check weather along the route.

Call the destination airport. Contact the pilot's emergency contacts. Query radar data from Nav Canada and, if the aircraft had a transponder, from surrounding ATC facilities. If the aircraft had an ELT — emergency locator transmitter — the Cospas-Sarsat satellite system may already have a hit.

Modern 406 MHz ELTs transmit a unique hex code tied to the aircraft registration. The satellite downlink gives a position circle, sometimes within a few hundred metres. Older 121.5 MHz units? Satellites don't listen anymore.

Only ground stations and overflying aircraft pick them up.

  • Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA) volunteers in private aircraft — trained spotters, critical for visual search
  • OPP, RCMP, or local police marine units — first on scene for lakes and rivers
  • Coast Guard vessels — for larger waterways
  • Civilian helicopters — contracted when military assets are tasked elsewhere The JRCC decides the mix based on weather, terrain, time of day, and asset availability. A missing Cessna 172 over Sturgeon Lake in July gets a different response than a King Air over Hudson Bay in January. How the Search Pattern Works You don't just fly around looking. Search patterns are mathematically derived to maximize probability of detection (POD) for a given asset, speed, altitude, and visibility. Common patterns over water Expanding square — starts at the last known position (LKP) and spirals outward. Best when the LKP is reliable and the target is likely nearby. Sector search — multiple legs radiating from a central point. Used when the LKP is uncertain but a general area is known. Parallel track (creeping line) — systematic back-and-forth legs. Covers large areas methodically. Standard for shoreline and island searches. Contour search — follows shorelines, reefs, depth changes. Critical because aircraft ditching often aim for shore or shallow water. Search altitude depends on the target. For a submerged aircraft? You're not seeing the airframe. You're looking for debris — seat cushions, oil slick, fuel rainbow, personal items. That means low. 500 feet AGL or lower. Slow. 80-100 knots. Spotters strained against glare and whitecaps. The human factor CASARA spotters train for this. They learn to scan in sectors, not stare. The eye detects motion and contrast at the periphery better than the fovea. They rotate every 30-45 minutes. Fatigue kills POD faster than weather. When the Aircraft Is Underwater This is where it gets hard. And where most people's mental model breaks. An aircraft that lands on water — even a controlled ditching — rarely floats long. High-wing Cessnas might stay afloat for minutes if the doors stay closed and the cabin seals. Low-wing Pipers? Often sink in seconds. Retractable gear aircraft that ditch with gear down flip inverted almost instantly. Once submerged, the search shifts from visual to electronic and sonar. ELT performance underwater Water blocks radio waves. A 406 MHz ELT antenna underwater is effectively deaf to satellites. The signal might reach a surface vessel or aircraft if the antenna is near the surface, but depth kills it fast. This is why some operators install external, buoyant ELT antennas or carry PLBs (personal locator beacons) on their person. Side-scan sonar and ROVs OPP and RCMP marine units deploy side-scan sonar — a towfish that paints an acoustic image of the lake bottom. It sees shape, not color. A Cessna 172 looks like a distinct cross shape: wings, fuselage, tail. But so does a sunken dock section or a pile of logs. Once a target is identified, an ROV (remotely operated vehicle) or divers confirm. In deep, cold lakes — and the Kawarthas have sections over 100 feet — divers face decompression limits, silt-out, and entanglement hazards.
